SNEAKERS TRENDS FW26: Between Ugliness and Elegance

In FW26, sneakers decisively move beyond their sportswear origins. Runways showcase a shift from utilitarian function to a more complex fashion language, where form, texture, and embellishment take center stage.

Noir Kei Ninomiya × Puma

The Paris-presented collaboration reinterprets the classic Puma silhouette through Ninomiya’s signature deconstruction and volumetric work.

The basic low-top design retains its athletic functionality but is completely transformed by decoration: semi-transparent 3D flowers create a “frozen” structural effect that contrasts with the vivid red base.

This design highlights an important shift: sneakers are no longer neutral wardrobe staples but become independent visual statements - almost sculptural objects.

Balenciaga

The new model, showcased under Pierpaolo Piccioli’s direction, maintains the brand’s recognizable traits while attempting to redirect its aesthetic.

The silhouette remains chunky but more streamlined and refined. There is a noticeable trend toward reducing visual aggression and moving toward a more restrained aesthetic.

At the same time, the design reflects tension between the house’s different legacies: Cristóbal Balenciaga’s architectural precision and Demna Gvasalia’s radical, ironic language. This creates an intermediate effect, where the new identity is still taking shape.

Miu Miu

In Miu Miu’s collection, sneakers appear as if taken from a grandfather’s wardrobe - with simple, grounded shapes, low silhouettes, and an almost utilitarian logic.

Yet this deliberate “plainness” becomes the foundation for transformation: the brand layers familiar retro codes with glamour - through metallic surfaces, deep hues, and delicate embellishments that function almost as jewelry.

The result is a precise contrast between ordinariness and desirability: the silhouette remains recognizable and slightly nostalgic, yet is fully perceived as a fashion object, where simplicity emphasizes, rather than diminishes, luxury.

General Trend

Analysis of the shows highlights several key directions:

 1. Transformation of the “ugly” aesthetic: exaggerated bulkiness recedes. “Ugly” is no longer defined by shape alone but appears through materials, textures, and design details.

 2. Reduction of silhouette: the dominance of bulky sneakers is replaced by more compact, low-profile models.

 3. Decorativeness: sneakers increasingly serve as statement pieces, using textures, transparent materials, and embellishments.

 4. Shift toward fashion: functionality yields to visual impact. Sneakers integrate into fashion contexts as equal elements of style.

In FW26, sneakers are in a state of transformation. They no longer fit neatly into “ugly” or “basic” categories but forge a new aesthetic at the intersection of sport, embellishment, and high fashion. This transitional state defines the modern sneaker: not merely a wardrobe item, but a full bearer of design intent.
